PERSONALITY

Akechi always wants to make sure that the first impression of him is a favorable one, especially with adults. He appears knowledgeable, polite, friendly and carefully calculates his words before speaking so that they hold considerable weight. He seems to be able to make his way into a conversation easily, his vast knowledge of multiple topics coupled with his soft and calm voice allows for his silver tongue to win him favors and admiration from others, adapting to each situation. For the most part, he chuckles at jokes all the while excusing himself for doing so, extruding considerable charisma despite his age. He enjoys debating with others, and while strongly believes in his own values, will also take the time to listen to others and discuss their viewpoints. Despite his age, he was allowed to work with the police force as a detective. He gets along well with Sae Niijima, his co-worker and jokes with her, trying to keep her relaxed.

On the surface, he appeared almost perfect.

He has a strong sense of justice which is in great part why he appears to be against the Phantom Thieves at first, thinking that their way of changing a person's entire personality appears too drastic and the fact they operated outside of the judicial system as anti-heroes could lead to a dangerous abuse of power.

Which, it takes one to know how to pull the wool over other's eyes.

In the end, it's all an act.

Truthfully, all of this personality is a carefully calculated dance by him, a role he plays so that he can carry out his true justice, a quest he's been harboring since his childhood to orchestrate the downfall of the man who caused his mother's suicide - that also happens to be his own father. While calm and collected, Akechi is a lot more the personality of a sociopath, caring very little to some of his victims in his quest for revenge. Of course he wasn't always like this, but after being given powers by 'a god', he becomes the living example of how power corrupts. He is quite literally obsessed with this quest to destroy his father that anything or anyone else that stands in his way are tossed aside with little to no regard.

All of this stems from his abandonment issues and his desire to be admired. Orphans in Japan are not treated very nicely, and the fact he was born out of wedlock, forced upon his mother by his father did not earn him any favors. With the only living family member alive being a piece of shit that Akechi wanted revenge against, he had to claw his way upwards from the ground to become who he is now. Constantly looked down due to who he was (an orphan) for most of his life, Akechi has cultivated and worked so that his public image is a paragon of a clean image. Unfortunately, while he earns the trust and admiration of adults and his peers, Akechi does not have true friends or people he can confide in, and his loneliness is kept behind closed doors. At least he assumes, missing that Sae might consider him at least important, caught up in his own laments and drive. When he spends time with the protagonist, one can see some of that loneliness break out, and how he finds happiness being with the others, even if he ends up denying it at first.

However since his quest for revenge was always in his heart, and his goal means he has to do terrible things such as murder innocents, he does not seem to regret much of what he does for his own twisted 'justice'. Most victims are themselves terrible people (there are a few notable exceptions, like Futaba's mother) which only serves to fuel his excuses.

All this means he was a fuse just waiting to go off, and he explode into insanity he does when he fights against Joker after the latter gets the best of him (and also avoids Akechi killing him). Angry at the fact that it seems that even when his rival was dealt a similarly terrible fate, he finds himself true friends, not fake facets and connections like Akechi had, in addition to being able to have the upper hands against him. He breaks down screaming how this is unfair, revealing his intense jealousy of the protagonist. It drives him completely mad to the point he willingly tosses aside the murder of his father, something that he had been preparing for since his mother's death, and claims that instead all he wants is to destroy Joker and all of what he stands for. He unleashes all of the powers he had hidden from the Phantom Thieves and faces them jut by himself. It is pathetic, but it also showcases who he is.

Eventually he is defeated, and realizing that his father already had the best of him, ends up sacrificing himself (seemingly) to aid the others. Maybe the first true act of justice he's shown. However when he miracously 'returns' during the third semester in the game somehow alive due to persona magic and special situation, Akechi shows a lot more of his true personality, reveling in the chaos of fighting shadows and laughing maniacally. He doesn't have to hold back anymore, and he just enjoys everything for what it is. He forms a deal with the protagonist to work together to figure out to get out of Maruki's illusion and control of the world. His entire demeanor is different even when interacting with the others, to the point of casually suggesting to simply kill Maruki when they give him his calling card, ("haha it was a joke...unless??").

More importantly, while realizing early on while everyone else was still clueless that there had to be a reason why he was suddenly 'alive' again and finding out he might just be brought back to life by Joker's desire to see him once more, he is willing to save the world instead. Maybe not perfectly, being who he is - he claims it's partly because he doesn't want to be under anyone's control again. Maybe a little too late, but above all he refuses to be tricked again, and understands the importance of freedom.
